Emergency Contraception

Sometimes referred to as the "morning after pill", emergency contraception (EC) is a method of birth control that can substantially reduce the risk of pregnancy after sex.  It will not work if you are already pregnant.  It is not the abortion pill ("RU-486").

One-pill levonorgestrel EC products (sold as Plan B One-Step®, Next Choice One-Dose®, Take Action™, My Way®, and others) can be sold directly on store shelves; there are no age restrictions, and no one purchasing EC should be asked for identification or denied the ability to purchase EC.  However, some stores/pharmacies may still have the products behind the pharmacy counter rather than out on shelves.  These products may be effective up to five days after unprotected sex but should be taken as soon as possible.

AfterPill™ can be purchased online.  However, shipping takes five to seven days, and this product should be taken within 72 hours.  Therefore, AfterPill™ is something that should be purchased as a backup method in case it is needed later.

Two-pill levonorgestrel EC products (such as Next Choice®) are sold behind the pharmacy counter; these are available without prescription to men and women aged 17 or older and with prescription to women younger than 17.  These products may be effective up to five days after unprotected sex but should be taken as soon as possible.

ella® (ulipristal acetate) is sold by prescription only and is available directly from the pharmacy.  ella® is effective up to five days after unprotected sex but should be taken as soon as possible.

The three most common brands of EC in Wyoming appear to be Plan B One-Step®, Next Choice®, and ella®.  See our brochure listing locations where various EC products are available.  Although there have been changes regarding product availability, store names, etc. since the brochure was printed, it is still a useful reference guide.
